The Downtown Castle Rock Alliance had the opportunity to sit down with Brooke Page-Thompson, the owner of the Buka Yoga Studio. Below are a few of our favorite questions we got to discuss with Brooke.
Why did you choose Downtown/what attracted you to owning a business in Castle Rock?
I have lived in Castle Rock for over 12 years. My husband and I love the small-town feel and community. I was a student at Ashva Yoga and then became a teacher. I fell in love with the location in the heart of Downtown Castle Rock and the cute space we have off 7th and Wilcox. Castle Rock is home and I wanted to continue supporting my community through continuing this beautiful practice of Yoga!
Tell us the story/background of your business. How did you end up running a business in your industry?
I was in Consulting for 15 years, traveled the world and had some amazing life experiences. About 5 years ago I had a little mid-life crisis, questioning everything and my overall life purpose, and ended up on a yoga retreat in Portugal. I’d never practiced before and instantly noticed the profound change I felt in my body, my mind and my breath. I fell in love with this practice and came home to find a home studio, Ashva Yoga. 2 years later I went and got my 200 hour teacher certificate, started teaching while working full time and realized how much I enjoyed teaching others. I left my corporate job last March and at that time the current owner of the studio was considering moving her business primarily to Equestrian Yoga (Ashva means equine/horse). She really had to twist my arm to take over this amazing community and space (not really!). It was the best decision I have made!
Favorite thing about owning a small business?
I love the people of Castle Rock and owning a small business gives me an opportunity to connect with other businesses and people across town. It is a lot of work, but it is so rewarding to see your business thrive and grow. Even with COVID-19, we have come out stronger than before and I am so excited to continue to support the community of Castle Rock through yoga.
What’s something unique that people may not know about you or your business?
Buka Yoga means laughter. We believe in making yoga accessible to everyone and have a little fun in the process. We are like a family and our word for the year is home. It truly feels like home every time you come to practice. We also, offer a practice called Yoga Nidra- guided meditation. A few of our classes are donation based and every month we donate the money to a local family, charity or business in need.
What’s the easiest way customers can support your small business right now?
Like our Instagram page and share us with friends and family (@bukayoga)! We’re open for business, so if you are a new student in town, come try our classes…4 classes for $40. We also offer 20% off any package to military, veterans, nurses, doctors, law enforcement, teachers, fire fighters and city employees. Because of COVID-19 we started live streaming all of our classes….it was such a huge success we are keeping it for all classes going forward, so you can join us from anywhere in the world!
